Are there any customizations - before I go and suprise change the scheme and piss everyone off for deleting something?

There are some. I highlighted them over at my site, but you can check out Blog Skins as you will find a cool collection of templates there.
I agree with Jen - I didn't want to change anything if it was going to screw it up, and I didn't want to be the only one picking the schemes. I like that it would change along with the collectiveness of our group.
